My creative practice grows out of the domestic conditions, rituals and materials I interact with each day.

Loma Prieta (1989)

Premonitions (1985)

DESCRIPTION (continued): It’s hard to articulate loss. The before and then the after and how one’s reality can change on a dime. I unearthed these images, taken by my dad, from a bin stored in my twin sister’s attic. My dad was and still is a meticulous photographer and captured countless moments from our family life. This series includes a photo of me on Easter morning in 1985, head thrown back indelight standing in front of our kitchen window. It juxtaposes this moment of childhood ease against a photo he took years later from the same vantage point, documenting the destruction caused by the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. The accordion-like distortion of the images was achieved by moving the photos as I scanned them, simulating the movement of tectonic plates.
