Scale Figures

DESCRIPTION: Mixed media collage of scale figures posed on photographs of domestic & architectural spaces from current design magazines.
MATERIALS:3D scale figures imposed on printed magazine ads & images.

PROCESS:This series grew out of the common practice in architectural exploration to add scale figures to a drawing or model as you work. I had a pack of scale figures on hand and one day started flipping through design magazines I subscribe to.  I started to place them into the spaces displayed on the pages and manipulated a light source to cast shadows and accentuate their forms.

The inhabitation of these immaculately controlled spaces by the figures that conformed – incidentally – to a normative gender binary and notions of Whiteness added a new dimension. While these glossy magazine images and advertisements intended to celebrate luxury, privilege and beauty I felt a palpable emptiness amplified by the presence of the figures.
